This is the most complex icon I have ever made, in my history of Icon making so please be gentle, as this was a miracle in itself!! Also this my second tutorial, so it took a while to remeber how to write one!!
1) Right I'm using this cap from X-Men: First Class
So we basically crop the cap to fit, what will be our icon space using the selection tool in normal, then once selected crop it via image >>Crop so now we have our base

2) Right now have our cropped cap resize it to 100*100 using image >> Image size or alt + ctrl +I

I know it looks a tiny bit small, but don't worry it will look better.

3) Now place our cropped cap on a blank 100*100 file, transparent background is better for this. Moving it to the centre of the file, so it looks like this

4) Duplicate the centred image twice, hide one of the duplicate layers, move the first one, so the bottom of the image is on the top like this

Once that has moved hide the layer, unhide the second duplicated layer, to the bottom of the image, so the faces are on the bottom of the icon, once completed unhide all the layers so it looks like this

5) Okay now on to the colouring, firstly curves Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Curves
RBG : Output 140, Input 112

Red : Output 138, Input 117

6) Now on to the selective colouring layer Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Selective Color. Then add the follow values
Red: 3, -10, -5, -2

Neutrals: -10, -4, -4, -4

Which ends in this result, which looks pretty good

7) You can either merge all the layers and save it as in the step above with the basic colouring, I wanted something in middle to be a special, so I set the middle image to black & white, by going Layers >> New Adjustment Layer >> Black & White
Make sure that the middle image is completely black & white, not the top or bottom image. So in the end you end up with

8)Once at this stage your layers should be simular to this

9) Finally flatten the image and save
